Match Reports

AUL 3 League - 12th October, 2008 : Ballinhassig 3-3 Wilton Utd B (Scorers: Senan Carrig, John Roche, Fergal McGrath)

Ballinhassig and Wilton served up another exciting game with 6 goals to add to the 5 exchanged between the teams last week. Ballinhassig started the game well dominating the early exchanges, and the visiting 'keeper had to be at his best to stop a shot from Senan Carrig when he was put through on goal. Wilton were lucky not to concede from some dangerous frees taken by Ray Kearney. It was almost 20 minutes before the visitors mounted their first meaningful attack, attacking down the right, with the cross finding an unmarked team mate in front of goal who finished well with his head. The visitors built on this, creating further chances and Denis Cogan had to be at his best to prevent a second a few minutes later, but by half time it was the home side who were in control of the game again.

The second half kicked off with Ballinhassig looking for an equaliser, and again free kicks and corners were testing the home defence, with Senan Carrig unlucky not to score. The equaliser came with just over 25 minutes remaining. A forward run from defence by Peter Desmond broke through the defence, but he was brought down just as he entered the penalty box. Senan Carrig picked up the loose ball and drove it low just inside the right post. Five minutes later the
visitors were back in front when one of their strikers blocked an attempted clearance from defence, the ball taking two deflections to go past the 'keeper and rolling into the goal before the defence could prevent it. 10 minutes later John Roche received the ball in behind the Wilton defence and finished low to the right to level the sides again. Wilton were back ahead just over a minute later, when the referee adjudged that a push on an attacher was inside the box. The penalty kick was driven right into the side net to give the 'keeper no chance. The home side pressed again for yet another equaliser and it came when another Ray Kearney free kick was headed on and Fergal McGrath volleyed it into the top right corner. Both sides attempted to press for a winner but as the players tired due to the fast pace of the game the chances became fewer, and it finished level at 3-3.

AUL 3 League - 4th October, 2008 : Wilton Utd B 4-1 Ballinhassig (Scorer: Fergal McGrath)

Wilton took control of this game from the start, taking the lead on 4 minutes directly from a free kick just outside the D of the penalty box. They added a second a few minutes later, when one of their attackers found space on the edge of the box and chipped the ball into the top right corner. They made it 3-0 within 30 minutes, when a shot was deflected and dropped on the head of an unmarked attacker to head in from 4 yards. Ballinhassig responded well and Senan Carrig had a few chances before the break, the best of them being a cross from Alan Coughlan in behind the defence that he got on the end
of but was unable to beat the 'keeper. Joe Desmond,

Ballinhassig took hold of the game early in the second half following some tactical changes at half time, and this period of sustained pressure lead to Fergal McGrath heading in from a Joe Desmond corner. Despite this pressure, the visitors failed to convert their chances and Wilton restored their 3 goal advantage with with 30 minutes remaining with a good move resulted in cross from the right wing, and this was put away well. The home side were down to 10 men within 5 minutes of this, and Ballinhassig created further chances for Peter Desmond, John Roche and others, but despite their best efforts they were unable to reduce the deficit and Wilton took all 3 points.
